Overview
Wenceslas Square is one of the main city squares and the commercial and cultural heart of Prague. Originally a horse market in the 14th century, it has witnessed many historic events. Today it is lined with hotels, shops, casinos, and restaurants.
History
The square was named after Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia, in 1848. The equestrian statue of Saint Wenceslas, created by Josef Václav Myslbek in 1912, stands at the upper end. During the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the square was a focal point for mass demonstrations.
